125 Chemicals before Breakfast

Chemicals in Body Care and Cosmetics

Recently my son and I began a discussion about how many chemicals an average person might come into contact with each day that their body would have to process and filter out. Consider your body care products first since that's one of the first things you'll do in the morning.

Let's say you shower in the morning (I'm an Evening Person but that's beside the point!). There is soap or body wash, shampoo and conditioner. Your face- washing routine which probably includes at least three products but most likely another two or three. Talc perhaps followed by deodorant.

Hair product such as gel and/or spray. Brush your teeth and, if you're really good, swish with a mouth wash. Time for make-up: foundation, concealer, blusher, powder, eye-liner, shadows (at least two!), mascara and lipstick, with or without liner.

Gosh, before you’re out of the bathroom you've probably used up to 25 products and we're not even out to the kitchen for breakfast yet. Oh, and I didn't include perfume or hand crème in that tally.

Now, here's the interesting part: look at the list of ingredients on some of your products. If you're really keen read them all and add them up. But just to get you thinking, go for a few; you'll get the idea.

Apart from water and some natural additions each one of the above products would have a minimum of five ingredients that are synthetic chemicals. Actually, there will be a heck of a lot more than five in each product but I'm being accommodating and only trying to prove a point. Besides, groups of five are easier to add up than a collection of different figures! So let's say you've used 25 products with a minimum of five chemicals in each: that's 125 chemicals before breakfast!

Now, think back to High School Chemistry (even third form/Year 9/Grade 8 Science will have covered this) and you'll remember that single chemicals in themselves weren't necessarily dangerous (okay, humour me and overlook the obvious ones!) but add them together and the cocktail effect starts to happen. The same thing is happening with the combinations of some of your "harmless" body care products. I'm not going to tell you which ones and spoil all your fun.

There are some articles regarding this on my Miessence site

2. Benefits of Miessence

I'm not suggesting that you throw everything away! I am suggesting you read the ingredients, do some research and begin to change what you can.

It would be an impossible task to avoid all harmful chemicals each day. That's not my goal. My goal is to reduce my family's exposure as much is what is practicable. That's all. Some days are better than others!

Quote from Onegroup:

"Cold-formulation is the method of manufacture we employ in making our products. None of our precious essential oils, herbal extract or cold-pressed fruit, seed and flower oils are subjected to any external heat during manufacture. This ensures that the heat-sensitive vitamins, minerals and other nutritional factors maintain their potency and viability, to literally feed your skin!"
